Three Olympic medals. But one final still hurts.

What happens when an Olympic silver medal feels like a missed opportunity?

In episode #148 of the Water Polo Expert Talk Podcast, Croatian water polo legend Maro Joković returns for Part 2 of our conversation.

Five Olympic Games. Three Olympic medals. Two World Championship titles. An extraordinary career filled with unforgettable moments – and some difficult lessons.

🥈 The other side of Olympic success

After winning Olympic gold in London 2012, Maro returned to the Games as defending champion in Rio 2016.

He reflects on the challenges of building a new team, facing an outstanding Serbian side in the final and eventually recognizing the value of Croatia's silver medal.

We also revisit the extraordinary circumstances of the Tokyo Olympics before turning to Paris 2024.

In one of the most personal moments of our conversation, Maro admits that the lost Olympic final in Paris still occupies his thoughts.

What makes the difference between reaching an Olympic final and winning it? And how important is psychological preparation when everything is on the line?

🌊 4x4 Water Polo – Opportunity or Challenge?

Having personally experienced the new 4x4 format in Dubrovnik, Maro shares his perspective on its speed, physical demands and reduced tactical complexity.

Initially skeptical, he recognizes its potential to attract new audiences and bring water polo to different locations.

But he also explains why traditional water polo must remain at the heart of the sport.
