From Mataró to California – and eventually back to Barcelona. Max Casabella's water polo journey connects two very different sporting cultures.

In Episode #145 of the Waterpolo Expert Talk, Max joins me to talk about growing up in one of the world's great water polo regions and his decision to leave Spain for the United States.

Max originally combined swimming and football before following his older brother into water polo. Around the age of 14, the sport became much more serious as he entered Spain's development pathway and began training several hours a day.

After progressing through the youth system and into Mataró's senior team, an opportunity emerged that would change his career: UC Berkeley.

Moving across the world wasn't an easy decision. Max talks about the role his family played in encouraging him to take the opportunity and how having his older brother with him helped him adapt to life in California.

We discuss one of the biggest strengths of the American college system: the possibility of combining high-level sport with a university education. Max explains how academics remain the priority while athletes are given the facilities and environment to develop in the pool at the same time.

And the sporting results weren't bad either: 🏆 Three NCAA titles in his first three seasons at Berkeley. Max explains what winning an NCAA Championship means in American college sport and why the college system can provide young water polo players with opportunities that are much harder to find elsewhere.

We also compare water polo in the United States and Europe, discuss the growing influence of European players in the NCAA system and why many athletes eventually make the opposite journey – from college water polo back to Europe.
