Jack Kocur on Coaching, Mental Strength & Developing Better Water Polo Players
What separates talented water polo players from athletes who can perform at the highest level?
In Part 2 of my conversation with Jack Kocur, we move from his personal journey to the bigger questions of coaching, player development and mental performance.
Jack explains why international experience is so important for young US players and how competing in Europe exposes athletes to greater speed, physicality and tactical complexity. But simply experiencing that environment isn't enough: players need to be coachable, adaptable and willing to fail in order to grow.
We also explore the increasing importance of the mental and cognitive side of water polo. Jack explains why he is studying concepts from other sports – including FC Barcelona's approach – and why challenging an athlete's mind can be just as important as repeating physical skills.
Another major part of the conversation is Jack's Olympic journey. He reflects on London 2012, Rio 2016 and Paris, and speaks openly about his own development as a coach – including mistakes, emotions and lessons learned during difficult moments.
In this episode:
🌍 Why young US players benefit from competing in Europe 🧠 Growth mindset, adaptability and learning from failure 🤽 Why being coachable matters ⚽ What water polo can learn from other sports 🏅 Lessons from three Olympic Games 🇧🇷 What Jack learned from a difficult Rio Olympics ❤️ Managing passion and emotions as a coach 🤝 Why coaches should “connect before they direct” 🎯 Developing individual athletes instead of using one coaching style 🇪🇸🇬🇷 Spain vs. Greece and unforgettable water polo atmospheres 🧠 The most underrated skill in water polo 🏆 Advice for young players with national team dreams 📣 Why young coaches should stop trying to be somebody else
Jack's message for ambitious young players is clear: reaching the highest level isn't something you switch on for training. It's a lifestyle built on consistency, the right environment and daily decisions.
And for young coaches? Don't copy somebody else's personality. Learn from great coaches – but find your own authentic way to lead.
