Konstantinos Kakaris – Building an Elite Center Forward

How do you develop into one of Europe's leading center forwards – and what can young water polo players learn from that journey?

In this episode of the Waterpolo Expert Talk, I sit down with Greek international Konstantinos Kakaris to talk about the foundations of his game, the evolution of modern water polo and the experiences that shaped his career across Europe.

Kakaris' relationship with water polo started almost by accident. As a young swimmer, he loved being in the water but found swimming itself increasingly boring. His mother suggested trying water polo – and once he started, he never stopped loving the sport.

We take a closer look at the highly demanding center forward position. Having also played as a center defender earlier in his career, Kakaris explains why understanding both sides of the battle at two meters can become a major advantage.

How modern water polo is changing

The changing rules have made water polo faster and increasingly demanding. For Kakaris, there is only one response: players have to adapt.

For young athletes in particular, he identifies one physical foundation that remains essential regardless of tactical or rule changes: the legs.

Kakaris estimates that leg work represents around 70–80 percent of the game for a center and believes strong legs will remain one of the fundamental requirements of water polo for decades to come.

But physical preparation is only part of the equation.

His second major message to young athletes is about consistency and mindset. You will not perform at exactly the same level every day – but you can still give the best you have available on that particular day. Building that habit in training creates a mentality that can last throughout an entire career.

One second to make the decision

Playing center also requires exceptional ball skills and extremely fast decision-making.

Unlike perimeter players, a center operates under almost constant physical pressure. There may be only one second to recognize the situation, choose the finish and execute the action before the opportunity disappears.

Growing beyond the comfort zone

We also explore Kakaris' career across European water polo.

Playing in Greece, Croatia and Italy – and preparing for his next chapter in Hungary – exposed him to different coaches, teammates and water polo philosophies. Instead of identifying one coach or club as the defining influence, Kakaris believes every environment added something to his development.

One move, however, represented an important turning point: leaving Greece for the first time.

Playing abroad as a foreign player created a different kind of pressure. In his words, a foreign player has to prove himself repeatedly because the club signed him to bring something extra to the team.

Leaving family, friends and familiar surroundings also meant leaving his comfort zone – and Kakaris believes that experience ultimately helped him become a better player.
